JR is an illusive ‘undercover photographer’, who pastes giant posters. His breathtaking work turns urban streets into staggering unauthorized exhibitions. The initial 28mm work, ‘Portrait of a Generation‘ led him up to the New York Times front page. His more recent ‘Face2Face‘ and ‘Women‘ have seen him capture portaits from the Middle East and Africa to Brazil. The gathered media below showcases JR’s incredible ‘Women‘, the third stage of his 28mm project.
The French artist first made his mark in Rio de Janeiro last year, as giant posters of staring eyes started appearing on buildings in the city’s oldest favela. He was drawn there following the controversial deaths of three young men, amid alleged collusion between Brazilian soldiers and a drugs gang.

Below is an IrishStreetArt.com first as we feature a piece from Romania. Fruct’s production is a great example of both stenciling and freehand and is one of our favourite clips on vimeo. Nice production, good pace, great subject!

June’s Twelve Door creation is “10″ by ABLE. 10 is a support group set up a number of years ago by 10 families with children with Down Syndrome under the age of 10.

Reduced provision for Special Education Needs being introduced on stealth like basis by the Minister for Education Batt O’Keefe is activating groups such as 10.
Withdrawing the support of Special Needs Assistants, reducing the input of Resource teachers and increasing class sizes will bring people with Special Needs and their families onto the streets of Dublin to protest against the damaging policies of this Government. For more visit Twelvdoors.com »

Banksy? 15 June 2009

The video below gives us a glimpse into Banksy’s recent exhibition in Bristol. These days Banksy is controversial for more than just his awe inspiring work. When we approached one local for directions when touring through Southbank in search of a few Banksys a while back, we were asked “Why would you bother look now, isn’t Banksy just another sell-out?” A bit despondent by the reaction of the Londoner’s lack of enthusiasm for one of our heroes we wandered through a tunnel under the Queen Elizabeth Hall that once was home to a banksy piece. Frustratingly, the piece had since been painted over but we wouldn’t be let down by the rest of the street art on show. You couldn’t but marvel at the crazy of ideas, styles and themes from writers from all over the globe.
Many feel that Banksy no longer sits comfortably with his peers in the underground street art movement. Seeing his books being sold in high street chains can be a bit unsettling. Saying that, his growth in stature has brought the guerrilla art movement into the public spotlight and that can only be a good thing. One thing is for certain, Banksy isn’t the only artist in the world pushing boundaries at the moment.

New installation/stencil works in Copenhagen, Denmark
Above told us “I’m happy to say that I finished making the video of my most recent works from here in Copenhagen, Denmark. I would be most thrilled to have your support with this post as it is 5000+ miles from my last piece in California and It would be a wonderful way to kick off the new tour that has started here in Europe. I had such a fun time incorporating the installation elements like the shower head and shower curtain along with the mixture of stencil and proverbial wordplay.”

Will St Ledger joined the MART team to bring interactive and visual feast to the eyes of clubbers. He tells us “Electro stenciling is a performance based art using a canvas covered in light sensitive paint and a strobe light. Very effective in the dark, but only lasts half an hour.” This clip is taken from POGO at The Twisted Pepper in Dublin.
The Dublin based Artist is building up quite a reputation as he continually creates iconic pieces addressing Ireland’s new age. From his iconic ‘Sinking Ship’ to the brutal ‘Awake with stitched Heart’ Will St Ledger is building a reputation as being one of the country’s leading artisitic commentators on the state our nation finds itself in.
