Ireland’s longest running graffiti crew, the TDA Klann (The Dark Angel’s) have come along way since their humble beginnings back in 1991. Since then they have become one of the most established of crews on the international stage. To celebrate twenty years in existence founding members hooked up with current members in London. IrishStreetArt.com’s latest international feature is Portugal’s gem, Lisbon. ‘Lisboa’ has seen street artists come from all over the world to leave their mark. We were lucky enough to photograph the work of heavy weight names like Brazil’s Os Gémeos, Italy’s Blu and INSA from the UK but the city was also brimming with local beautiful pieces. In fact it’s hard to walk more than a few footsteps in some of the city’s districts without coming across a paste-up or stencil. Even the room in our hotel had a graffitied canvas hanging on their walls.

Boasting great alternative tours, brilliant art exhibition venues and boutique hostels Lisbon is very visitor friendly so we totally recommend taking a trip to the most westerly capital in Europe.

The video below shows Banksy‘s efforts at the opening sequence for ‘The Simpsons’. Banksy is said to have been inspired by reports that Simpsons characters are animated in Seoul, South Korea. Before Fox pulled it down, the YouTube video had amassed 42,305 views, and it’d be safe to say that almost none of us actually watched it on TV, to the point that there was even quickly dispelled speculation as to whether or not the segment had actually aired. The episode, MoneyBart, made its US debut last night and will be shown in the UK and Ireland on 21 October.

Above sent IrishStreetArt.com in his most recent stencil from Paris. He told us ‘Last year I was traveling for 3-months around Europe and spent 2 weeks in Paris. One day when I was walking around Paris I found this spot but unfortunately I had just 1 day before my flight to Rome. After observing the large concrete frame on the wall, it gave me a lot of inspiration for several ideas on how to creatively interact with the un-used frame and location. One idea was to juxtapose an “art thief” stealing a popular painting like the Mona Lisa from the frame. I felt the idea and site-specific stencil would interact well with the un-used frame and the fact that the Mona Lisa is located just 10 minutes away inside the Louvre museum.

Time always changes things and with that new situations arise. Since last year when I was in Paris I’ve noticed a lot of new topics in street art and more importantly the thievery of art works in the street. I felt it more interesting and relative to have the art thief portrayed in the stencil stealing a piece of art that actually gets stolen quite often. The English artist Banksy is one of the most popular street artists and highly publicized victims of his street artworks being stolen. It’s not by random chance this happens to Banksy’s art as first and foremost he makes great work but also due to the fact that his indoor works have sold for several hundred thousand dollars you can imagine when he paints outside in the street his works are soon sought after by thieves.

It’s an interesting concept and somewhat of an irony as we the artists and the thieves are both working in an illegal manner. One illegal activity inspires another. The artist paints illegally with spray cans on a wall, while the thieves jack hammer and chip off illegally painted walls, illegally. It’s kind of like the pot calling the kettle black to a degree.
I took the initiative to comment and create a situation in this piece that could mimic both illegal acts simultaneously executed here in the painting and in the process.

Many years ago before Banksy’s mass appeal he painted his popular rat image that read, “Because I’m worthless.” Times have changed Banksy is a common household name as well as the increased value of his artworks. I felt like it would be applicable to the current state of affairs to appropriate his previous statement to “Because now I’m worth it” to reflect the past and current thievery of his street artworks.’

ANewSpace present ‘Despite Your Face. This ambitious project consists of Irish and international Street Art from the Dublin Area. An opening party will take place on Culture Night, Friday the 24th of September from 6pm and the exhibition will continue until Sunday the 3rd of October at ANewSpace Gallery Boutique, 6 Chatham Street Dublin 2.

Featuring Works by: ADW, Asbestos, Canvaz, Cisto, Conor Harrington, Cool-C, DBC, Eine, Eelus, Karma, Loki, Morgan, Solus Splink(i love lamp), Will St Leger, Xpir and more to be announced

This collection hopes to present Irish and International street art in the Dublin area. It is by no means a complete overview (as the scene is far bigger then anyone can imagine) but instead is a snap shot of an underground existing in Irish society.

The exhibition is made up of a gallery show at Anewspace and special commission outdoor pieces. The first by ADW was completed on Sunday at Dame Lane, Dublin.

IrishStreetArt.com was invited to Iceland for the Reykjavík Culture Night 2010 to enjoy the city’s art installations. A big thanks to Willie and Maggi for playing host. Reykjavik Culture Night involves thousands of people wandering through the streets of the downtown district with a backdrop of amazing artist and music performances. As you stroll with the crowds the air is filled with eclectic sounds ranging from Opera and Trad to Death Metal and Techno from side streets, balconies and pubs. It really has to be seen to be believed.

The street art on show in Iceland’s capital is so accessible and seems to be a big part of everyday life of young Icelanders. For such a small population, Iceland punches well above its wait when it comes to graffiti writers with tight and unique style. The photos below were all taken in the downtown district and all within a kilometer of each other. Iceland in general is an amazing place.

Just a heads up though, if you go there don’t eat the Whale! Its crazy in this day and age but whaling is legal in Iceland even though only 1% of the islanders eat whale meet. This means that the Whaling is almost exclusively for the island’s tourists.

Having just flown back to Portland from Los Angeles yesterday night Above told IrishStreetArt.com ‘I worked all day on getting the recent “Above Hollywood” video finished from the recent street works hung in Los Angeles.’ Above spent the last 12 days down in Los Angeles hanging his newly themed “Movie star arrow mobiles” site specifically in Hollywood where all of the movie magic is created. There were 50 of each male and female (100 arrows hung total) movie stars as the topic and face of each arrow mobile. Above explained ‘I enjoyed giving back to Hollywood a large dose of what it is infatuated and consumed with, that being movie’s and the actors that make the movies.’

Hollywood was the kick off city of Above‘s four month long summer tour around the USA and Europe. including New York City, Paris. London, San Francisco, and Berlin. Above leaves Portland for New York city tomorrow night for an intense thirty day street project in Manhattan… Living the Dream!

This timelapse piece, ‘Age Face’, comes from Sligo man, Kevin McGloughlin and shows us just what you can achieve with a craft knife, cutting mat and a nice idea. The Barcelona influenced street artist tells us ‘I dont generally work with stencils, but here is one I made recently. It’s a reproduction of a free hand piece I painted. I photographed it and redrew it. I then pretty much duplicated one side to make it more symmetrical, but it still has a bit of variety as apposed to a mirrored image.’

In 1984 Steve Powers started climbing rooftops in his neighborhood and painting his alias ESPO as a dues paying member of the ICY graffiti club. 25 years later he returned home to Philadelphia in the summer of 2009 to write a love letter across the same rooftops facing the Market-Frankford line. The letter, meant for one, with meaning for all, encompasses 50 walls on a 20 block stretch of market street. Drawing input, inspiration, and work from the community ESPO created a letter to and from west Philly. This unprecedented public art project was a collaboration of Powers, The Mural Arts Program, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. It required 1200 cans of spray paint, 800 gallons of bucket paint, and the skilled hands of 20 of the finest spray painters in America, who Powers put into the legendary ICY club.

“A Love Letter For You – Brick Valentines On The Philly Skyline” documents the art and the neighborhood that inspired this ambitious public art project.
